CIA supposedly killed senior al-Qaida member in Pakistan or so they say. Pakistani officials have yet to confirm al-Libi's death, saying they were trying to gather details from the thermobaric Hellfire missile attack on the village outside of Mir Ali, the second-largest town in the northern region. “Trying to gather details” conjures an unaccustomed picture in ones mind. Since being fielded, HELLFIRE missiles have proven their effectiveness in combat, in Operation Just Cause in Panama, Operation Desert Storm, Operation Allied Force in Kosovo, Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan, and most recently, Operation Iraqi Freedom—where they have been fired successfully from Apache and Cobra attack helicopters, Kiowa scout helicopters, and Predator unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) drones. The Israeli Defense Forces have used them extensively against Palestinian, Lebanon, the US in Afghanistan, Fallujah and Iraq targets.
Six years ago Britain readied the war theater toward thermobaric weapons. This type of warhead differs from normal explosives in producing a prolonged and extremely destructive blast wave. It is indeed monstrous.
The troops in Afghanistan demanded a new weapon fast; the thermobaric weapons were quietly approved. That is what the CIA used to blow up the building where al-Libi was rumored to stay.
There are plenty of such weapons in the US arsenal already, ranging from the BLU-118 'cave buster' to the 'hyperbaric' AGM-114N Hellfire at the large end to the Marine's SMAW-NE bazooka and the XM1060 40mm grenade. All have been highly praised for their effectiveness.
However, there may be some legal challenge to weapons such as hand-held thermobaric devices which can easily demolish multi-storey buildings. The Law of Armed Conflict rests on the principles of "military necessity, unnecessary suffering, proportionality, and distinction (discrimination)". A weapon which does not just take out the sniper but also every non-combatant in the same apartment block may be seen as disproportionate or indiscriminate. The thermobaric Hellfire weapon is carried on a soldiers shoulder.
The CIA operates in Iraq, Iran, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, should al-Qaida return the favor and run al Qaida operations in California, Florida, Wyoming, Iowa, Texas and murder Republican officials with aggressive air strikes and thermobarics in the US?
